April 17, 2018: MAVEN Project Educational Session, Family Medicine: Advance Care Planning and End of Life Care:

The MAVEN Project is very excited to announce our upcoming Educational Sessions! As always, these sessions are presented via Zoom videoconferencing, and consist of 20-30 minutes of a presentation and 15 – 20 minutes of Q&A. Our volunteers are eager to discuss your patients, so please don’t hesitate to come with questions or cases you’d like to discuss.

Speaker: Dr. Peter Candell

Specialty: Family Medicine

Presentation Title: Advance Care Planning and End of Life Care

Bio: After completing Residency in Family Medicine in 1985, Dr. Candell  worked as a Family Physician for almost 30 years, primarily in Alameda California. From 2010 to 2014, he also served as Medical Director for a large Medical Group in the San Francisco Bay Area. As an Assistant Clinical Professor at the UCSF School of Medicine, he has, for several years, been teaching small group seminars to medical students. In addition, he is part of an educational initiative with a group of Physicians at the Alameda-Contra Costa County Medical Society which focuses on Advanced Care Planning. His main area of interest is helping physicians learn and implement effective communication strategies with their patients, with a particular focus on: (1) Shared Decision Making and Motivational Interviewing, and (2) Advanced Care Directives and End of Life Care.
