Redwood Community Health Coalition Announces a

Series of Mental Health Trainings

for Primary care Providers to Improve Patient- Centered Care

Redwood Community Health Coalition  has begun an effort to increase mental health access, strengthen integrated health services, and improve patient-centered care by hosting a series of workshops for family doctors and other primary care providers.  Focusing on  enabling doctors to render appropriate mental health prevention screenings, treatment and medicine management, these workshops will help  primary care providers to develop a regional approach for diagnosis and care.

Prevention and early detection of mental health illness must be available to all people.  A large segment of the working poor are at risk for mental illness and often do not get screened for mental illness.  RCHC community clinic are uniquely positioned to reduce this disparity through early detection and treatment since we are the medical homes for approximately 150,000 people in Sonoma, Marin, Yolo and Napa counties.

Research has shown that the underlying behavioral health disorders account for up to seventy percent of all primary care visits.  As such, several community health centers in our community and throughout our state have achieved advanced mental health integration.  Our project will leverage the experiences and best-practices of those clinics to achieve a level of advanced health integration in our region.  The goals of the workshop aim to:

  • Increase access to culturally-competent, integrated mental, behavioral and primary health care services.
  • Reduce stigma and disparities in access to early mental health screenings and interventions.
  • Strengthen active mental and behavioral health prevention services at community health centers.

The RCHC Mental Health Workshops Planning Committee is pleased to announce the first of our series.

Primary Care Providers are uniquely position to increase Early Detection of Mental Health illness:

Studies also show that most people who are not yet undiagnosed with mental health disorders  are much more likely to seek care from their medical doctor than from a mental health provider.

Research also shows that behavioral health patients who have trusting and “therapeutic” relationships with their primary care doctors are more likely to follow their medication regimen, less likely to have side effects as a result, and more likely to obtain psychiatric services when referred.

The  next four workshops will focus on the following topics:

1) Early detection and treatment of Bipolar Disorder,

2) Early detection and treatment of Personality Disorders and Co-occurring disorders,

3) Early detection and treatment of Psychotic Disorders,

4) Early Detection and treatment of Child and Adolescent mental health disorders, including eating disorders and ADHD.
