Those who saved residency program deserve our thanks
EDITORIAL
Sutter's Family Practice Residency Program provides critical medical care to thousands of local people who are uninsured or underinsured.
Not only that, but without the program, it would be much harder to attract young doctors to Sonoma County, with its high cost of living and low medical reimbursement rates.
So, when Sutter Medical Center announced plans to close its Santa Rosa campus (placing the future of the residency program in jeopardy), the medical community leaped into action.
Kaiser Medical Center, Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, UC San Francisco, Sutter and Southwest Community Health Center created a partnership in order to keep the program alive.
The end result: When Sutter closes, the residents will receive inpatient training at Kaiser and Memorial. And, on Wednesday, residents began providing outpatient care at Southwest's two clinics. The deal was made possible with a $3 million grant from Kaiser and a $1.25 million loan from Sutter.
In the cutthroat world of health care, the fact that five institutions are working together is good news. The fact that their collaboration will save a critical community resource is cause for celebration.
