Teen pregnancy will be focus locally in May
AUTHOR
The month of May is "National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month." Communicare Health Centers' Teen Program, together with students from River City High School in West Sacramento and Woodland and Cache Creek High Schools in Woodland, have developed an informational campaign to promote awareness and understanding of this pressing topic.
The campaign presents an opportunity to remind the community and the political leaders among us about the importance of supporting local teen pregnancy prevention efforts. This years campaign will serve to empower teens with the information necessary to reduce their risk of pregnancy through healthy decision-making.
The students will make presentations to the Yolo County Board of Supervisors; the City Councils of Woodland, Davis and West Sacramento; the Woodland and Davis Joint Unified School Districts; to ask to have May proclaimed as "Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month."
Involved locally will be Gabe Rivas, Alexis Hackett and Guadalupe Ruiz, Jazmin Hernandez, Viviana Nevarez, and Alphonso Ramirez, all from Woodland High School; and Eliana Heredia, a Woodland Community College student.
The students will be providing information about pregnancy during school lunch hours. Off-campus after school, the students will provide information on Friday at the corner of Pioneer Avenue and East Gibson Road. On Friday, May 16, the students will be outside of Woodland High School on Beamer Avenue.
In addition to the presentations, the students will be organizing various activities throughout the month at their respective campuses to promote healthy choices among their peers.
Founded in 1972 as the Davis Free Clinic, CommuniCare has grown into a comprehensive health care organization offering medical and dental care, substance abuse treatment services, and health education throughout Yolo County at seven community clinic sites and in the community..
