Construction program honored by CommuniCare
Next Friday, CommuniCare Health Centers will recognize the Yolo County Construction Program for its significant contributions of time, organization and personal effort in recently completing a playground for Yolo County children served by CommuniCare Health Centers in West Sacramento.
The YCCP is a partnership between the Yolo County departments of Probation and Alcohol, Drug & Mental Health, the Yolo County Office of Education, and Northern California Construction and Training.
The program emphasizes education, vocational training, drug and alcohol treatment and pro-social skill instruction for youth who have come to the attention of law enforcement in Yolo County.
The program has been in existence for more than ten years, originally emphasizing conservation work throughout the community, along with academics.
Within the last year, a new partnership was forged with NCCT (in West Sacramento) for a pre-apprenticeship program that prepares people of all ages for apprenticeships in construction trades. This change has enabled the program to expand the numbers of youth served by approximately 30 percent.
Currently, 20 young people per semester are provided the opportunity to build upon their social skills, substance abuse protective factors, educational achievement and vocational skills through this rehabilitative program which is often utilized as an alternative to placing youth out of the community and into costly residential group home settings.
Friday, April 25, will be Global Youth Service Day a day designated to recognize and celebrate youth who contribute to their communities by helping other youth.
The CommuniCare playground project is an ideal example of the spirit of community involvement that Global Youth Service Day is intended to recognize.
That Friday, at noon, the youth who participated in the construction of the playground will be honored in a celebration for Global Youth Service Day at CommuniCare Health Centers at 500 B Jefferson Blvd., Suite 195, in West Sacramento. The public is encouraged to attend this celebration.
