Who's Who in Health Care in Sonoma, Marin and Napa counties

Lori Austin, R.N.

Lori Austin is the interim CEO for Palm Drive Hospital in Sebastopol. She has been with the company for about six years in other positions, including her most recent stint as director of nursing. Since taking over leadership three months ago, she has helped lead renovations at the hospital as well as install a new helicopter pad and open a district-run medical group.

Cathy Bryan

Blood Bank of the Redwoods President and Chief Executive Officer Cathy Bryan has worked for the bank for 30 years, including 20 in her current position. During her tenure she has increased blood donations from 19,000 to 45,000 units annually and increased employment from 25 to 150.

She developed the first-ever Food and Drug Administration-licensed blood-bank software program with the Eden Blood Bank User Group, an association she created comprised of eight independent community blood centers.

Guy Chicoine

Medical Group Administrator Guy Chicoine joined Kaiser Permanente 15 years ago but only recently moved to his current position in Santa Rosa three months ago. His primary duties include overseeing operations for the outpatient clinics, lab, radiology, emergency room and communications between departments. Mr. Chicoine said he was following in his family’s footsteps when he entered the health care field 16 years ago but has since enjoyed making people’s lives better with his life’s work.

Judy Coffey, R.N.

As senior vice president and area manager for Kaiser’s Sonoma and Marin medical centers since 2004, Judy Coffey oversees the operations of 50 primary and specialty departments with a combined staff of more than 4,000 physicians and other employees. She has been with Kaiser for about 30 years in various positions in hospitals and medical groups. She is also a member of the American Heart Association Executive Board, North Bay Hospital Council, Sonoma County Health Action and other county groups. She is a registered nurse, and she has a bachelor’s in management and a master’s in business administration.

Mike Cohill

Mike Cohill is the president and chief executive officer for Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa and county organizations including Sutter Medical Foundation North Bay. He is responsible for about 1,400 employees and has been a member of the Sutter Health’s leadership team for 20 years. Last year the hospital announced plans to close acute-care services in Sonoma County, but officials recently reversed the decision after negotiations with Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital broke down.

Joel Criste

The Marin Independent Physicians Association is a health care network of about 100 Marin County physicians led by Chief Operating Officer Joel Criste, who is also CEO and founder of the Prima Medical Group. He started with the Marin IPA right out of college 16 years ago and has served as CEO for the past six years. He has a bachelor’s in finance and a master’s from Saint Mary’s College in Moraga.

Shahab Dadjou

As chief executive officer of Redwood Regional Medical Group, Shahab Dadjou has helped expand the multi-specialty group by 30 physicians this year. The practice is the largest privately-owned physician organization in the region with ten medical campuses in Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties.

He is a director and board of managers member for the newly formed Cancer Clinics of Excellence organization, and he also serves on the board of directors for the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce. He has a bachelor’s and master’s in business administration.

Lee Domanico

Marin Healthcare District Executive Director Lee Domanico was hired a little more than three months ago to help develop a plan for the possible takeover of Marin General Hospital after Sutter Health announced last year intentions of backing out of the lease early. He is a previous chief executive officer of the Legacy Health System of Portland, Ore., and El Camino Hospital in Mountain View and he has worked in health care for about 30 years.

Daymon Doss

Oklahoma-native Daymon Doss has worked as executive director for the Petaluma Health Care District for 11 years after serving the company in a different position for 17 years. He helped negotiate the lease of Petaluma Valley Hospital to the St. Joseph Health System.

Naomi Fuchs

Naomi Fuchs has been the chief executive officer of the nonprofit Southwest Community Health Center for more than seven years, where she leads the primary care of about 11,000 low-income and uninsured patients. The clinic delivers close to $1 million in uncompensated care annually through federal, state and local grants and recently took over operating control of the Chanate Family Practice Center.

Ms. Fuchs is a member of the Redwood Community Health Coalition, Sonoma County Health Action, Sonoma County Managed Medi-Cal Planning Group, Mental Health Services Act Prevention and Early Intervention Planning Steering Committee, among others.

Carl Gerlach

As Sonoma Valley Hospital president and chief executive officer, Carl Gerlach helped launch a joint-powers authority agreement with Palm Drive Hospital, Healdsburg District Hospital and Mendocino Coast Hospital. He started his health care career 35 years ago as executive director for Livingston Community Health Services. Before joining SVH, Mr. Gerlach worked as director of HFS Consultants in Oakland and CEO of the East Bay Medical Network, also in Oakland.

Gary Greensweig, D.O.

Gary Greensweig is the chief medical officer of St. Joseph Health System—Sonoma County, where he provides leadership and directs performance improvement and medical staff services. He is a family physician and has practiced in Santa Rosa for the past 22 years.

Robin Hagenstad, R.N.

Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa Chief Nursing Officer Robin Hagenstad was the company’s first in that position when she started five years ago. She previously worked for the St. Joseph Health System for 28 years as the vice president of patient-care services in Sonoma County and executive director of patient-care services at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

She helped implement the Concurrent Care Intervention process that resulted in a Quality of Care Award for Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa from the Voluntary Hospital Association in 2006 and 2007.

Anne Hosfeld, R.N.

Novato Community Hospital Chief Administrative Officer Anne Hosfeld has been with the hospital for more than 26 years. She has been in her current position since 1997 and is also a member of Healthy Marin Partnership and past member of Novato Chamber of Commerce.

Sharon Jackson

Marin Healthcare District President Sharon Jackson is in her fourth year on the board and second as chair. She said her current goal is to raise finances for needed seismic upgrades to the hospital. She is also president for Health Marketing & Management, which she founded in 1985. She has worked in the health care industry in other capacities since 1974.

Susan Janvrin

Susan Janvrin has worked for Kaiser Permanente for the last 15 years, three of which have been as chief operating officer. She is a member of the Association of California Nurse Leaders and the board secretary for the California Parenting Institute. She has worked in health care for 35 years in various positions including as a clinical nurse and in pediatrics.

Pat Kendall, R.N.

Kaiser Permanente Medical Group Administrator Patricia “Pat” Kendall has been in her current position for 16 years and with the organization since 1973. She has received several awards in her career including the 2008 Ann Weston Community Services Award from the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce and she was the first recipient of Community Action Marin’s Dorothy Hughes Humanitarian Award in 2004.

She has a bachelor’s in health services administration/business and a master’s in organizational development and human resource management.

Sandra Lew

Hospice by the Bay, formerly called Hospice of Marin, has three locations in Marin, Sonoma and San Francisco. President and Chief Executive Officer Sandra Lew was recently appointed after taking over for former leader Mary Taverna earlier this year. Ms. Lew has been with the company for five and a half years and has worked in health care for 25 years.

Jill Magri, R.N.

Jill Magri has served as chief operating officer for the Kaiser Permanente Foundation Hospital for the last five years. She is also on the board of directors for the Petaluma Health Center and the Marin Workforce Investment Board. Additionally she belongs to a collaborative group that completed the Marin Simulation Center on the Indian Valley Campus of the College of Marin, and she currently leads a team of agencies evaluating the development of a medical respite center for the homeless in Marin.

Cynthia Melody

Sonoma County Medical Association Chief Executive Officer Cynthia Melody leads approximately 700 physicians in the nonprofit group, which is about 65 percent of the total physicians in the county. She has been actively involved in campaigns to increase Medicare reimbursements and has been credited with pulling the organization out of a slump in 2000 when its former chief executive officer and prominent funding source left the organization.

Larry Meredith, Ph.D.

Larry Meredith has served as director of the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services since September 2001. He directs more than 700 full- and part-time employees in 10 locations and oversees a budget of about $128 million.

Gary Mizono, M.D.

Gary Mizono became physician-in-chief of Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in San Rafael last year after working for Kaiser for more than 16 years. After finishing his residency in head and neck surgery, he started with a private practice in San Francisco in 1985.

He is a board member for Hospice by the Bay and Kimochi Inc.

Nancy Oswald

Nancy Oswald is the executive director of the Redwood Community Health Coalition. The advocacy group is a network of 18 community clinics and other health organizations in Sonoma, Napa, Marin and Yolo counties. Ms. Oswald and other advocates are currently in the process of implementing a electronic medical records system accessible from 10 clinics beginning with a new facility in Sebastopol.

George Perez

George Perez has been chief executive officer and president of St. Joseph Health System – Sonoma County since 2005. He is responsible for both Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and Petaluma Valley Hospital, as well as other hospice programs in Petaluma and Marin and the St. Joseph Home Care Network. In total, he oversees about 2,600 employees.

Kathryn Powell

Petaluma Health Center Chief Executive Officer Kathryn Powell has led the nonprofit, federally qualified community health corporation for five years and is responsible for working with the board of directors and managing the facility and employees. The clinic sees about 4,400 low-income, uninsured and underinsured patients a month.

Ms. Powell is in the process of assisting with the implementation of an electronic medical records system with 10 other regional clinics, and she assisted in opening dental services at the Petaluma clinic for this first time this year.

Evan Rayner

Healdsburg District Hospital Chief Executive Officer Evan Rayner has worked in health care for 21 years, a little less than two of which he’s been in his current position. He is a board member of the Northern California Healthcare Authority and the Rural Healthcare Advisory Board. He has a bachelor’s in political science and a master’s in health care administration.

Alena Ritch-Wall

Northern California Center for Well-Being Executive Director Alena Ritch-Wall came to the wellness center in April 2007 with 10 years of experience in health care, and she currently chairs the Community Activity Nutrition Coalition and the Wellness Forum subcommittee.

She recently completed a collaborative project with the Sonoma County Economic Development Board called the Worksite Wellness Toolkit – a free online guide for employers who want to start their own wellness program.

Chris Rogers

Sutter Medical Foundation North Bay Executive Director Chris Rogers is responsible for administrative oversight of the group. He is a member of the Medical Group Management Association and the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Rita Scardaci, R.N., M.P.H.

Rita Scardaci is the director of the Sonoma County Department of Health Services, where she is responsible for a $200 million budget and more than 900 employees. She is currently in her third year at the post, and she co-chairs and helped create the county health-advocacy group Sonoma County Health Action. She is on the board of the California Endowment and she chairs the Sonoma Health Alliance Leadership Group.  She has worked in health care for more than 40 years and she recently helped form the Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Consortium.

Bob Schultz, M.D.

Thirty-six-year health care veteran Bob Schultz has worked for Kaiser for more than 27 years, including the last 12 years at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center of Santa Rosa as physician-in-chief. He is responsible for overseeing the medical group operations, which includes all physicians and outpatient clinical staff including lab, radiology and emergency staff.

He is a former president of the Sonoma County Medical Association and he received a 2007 Leadership Santa Rosa Award for Leadership Excellence in the Field of Health Care.

John Shen

Marin Community Clinics Executive Director John Shen oversees the group’s two, soon-to-be three, clinics in Novato and Greenbrae that care for more than 15,000 patients. The company is near to completing a third office in San Rafael, and it has begun fundraising to relocate its Novato office to a larger, more-visible location.

Mr. Shen has led the clinics for eight months after moving to the Bay Area from Hong Kong in 1978 and working in previous health care positions for 28 years.

Jim Suver

Administrator and Vice President of Operations Jim Suver joined Petaluma Valley Hospital in May 2007. He has a bachelor’s in accounting and a master’s in health administration. He has worked in health care for 23 years after starting as senior accountant at Novato Community Hospital.

Mary Szecsey

Mary Szecsey has worked as executive director for West County Health Centers for the last 13 years. The clinics are located in Guerneville, Occidental and Sebastopol and they serve low-income, underin-sured and uninsured patients. The nonprofit is a federally qualified health center that offers primary care, prenatal and obstetrics, immunizations, breast cancer detection programs and other services.

Ms. Szecsey is a member of several community organizations including the Redwood Community Health Coalition, Sonoma Health Access Coalition and the Sonoma County Health Action council.


NAPA COUNTY

Maryann Eckhout

Maryann Eckhout has served as executive director of the Napa County Medical Society for 20 years and in the same position with the Solano County Medical Society for 10. She coordinates the activities of physician members including legislative advocacy and community forums. In 2002 and 2003, she served as chair for the California Medical Association’s executives’ conference and from 1996 to 2005 she chaired the Napa Chamber of Commerce’s Health Care Committee. She is currently on the Solano Coalition for Better Health’s board of directors.

Steven Herber

Steven Herber was appointed chief medical officer for St. Helena Hospital in late March, and he is now responsible for leading the medical staff in the improvement of patient safety and quality, overseeing development of improved patient outcomes, engaging medical staff in problem solving and other operational duties.

He is a board member of the Adventist Health Physician Leader-ship Committee and the St. Helena

Hospital Medical Executive Committee and he continues to serve as medical director of the St. Helena Institute of Plastic Surgery.

JoAline Olson

As president and chief executive officer of St. Helena Hospital, JoAline Olson oversees approximately 1,000 employees. She has been with the company for about 22 years, taking her current title in 1997. In the past she worked as a public health director and pediatric nurse practitioner and she currently sits on the California Hospital Association’s board of directors.

She helped the hospital raise money to build new cancer and outpatient surgery centers, and she also led the group towards recognition as one of the top 100 cardiovascular hospitals in the country.

Ron Scott

Ron Scott is the vice president of human resources for the Queen of the Valley Medical Center. He is responsible for overseeing human resources, employee health, workers’ compensation and employee assistance programs for 1,650 employees.

Prior to joining the St. Joseph Health System hospital facility, Mr. Scott worked for CHW Health System of Sacramento and the San Jose Medical Group.

Dennis Sisto

Dennis Sisto has worked as president and chief executive officer of Queen of the Valley Medical Center for more than eight years, and he is responsible for the day-to-day direction, control and evaluation of the operation of the medical center. Mr. Sisto has worked for the St. Joseph Health System for about 18 years. He has a bachelor’s in health care management and a master’s in business.

Randolph Snowden

Randolph Snowden is the director of the Napa County Health and Human Services Agency. He oversees central administration of the financial department, operations, regulatory and privacy compliance, records and special project support.
