By Dorsey Griffith
Susan G. Komen for the Cure will grant more than $1.1 million to 23 Northern California groups Wednesday for programs in breast cancer detection, education and supportive services.
The grant money is part of the $2.2 million raised last May during the annual Komen Sacramento Race for the Cure, which drew more than 20,000 participants.
Among the grant recipients in the Sacramento area:
• Boat People S.O.S., for education of low-income Vietnamese American women about breast cancer.
• Breaking Barriers, for treatment and financial assistance to women diagnosed with breast cancer.
• CommuniCare Health Centers, for screening, education, outreach and case management for low-income women in Yolo County.
• Health Education Council, for educational outreach to underserved women age 39 or younger in Yuba, Sutter and Butte Counties.
• Hmong Women's Heritage Association, for education targeting Hmong women.
• Northern California PET Imaging Center, for positron emission mammography for 250 underserved or under-insured women who need the high-resolution imaging.
• Save Ourselves, for support and education for Spanish, bilingual and English-speaking breast cancer patients and for teen breast health education.
• Sutter Cancer Center Sacramento, for enhanced services to Spanish, Russian or Chinese-speaking women with breast cancer.
• UC Davis School of Medicine, for various projects targeting breast education, awareness and screening to Asian American, African American, and South Asian American women.
• Y-ME Northern California, for rural breast health awareness and screening in underserved Sacramento Valley communities.
• YWCA of Contra Costa and Sacramento counties for education on early detection of breast cancer for underserved ethnic and racial minority groups.
The grants range from $19,000 to $75,000.
From the race proceeds, the Sacramento Valley affiliate of the Komen Foundation also sent $471,500 to Komen's national office for breast cancer research, said Komen spokeswoman Nancy Mallory. She said the remaining funds are used to pay for local operations, including nearly $367,000 for race organization and expenses.
