CHW awards its biggest batch of community grants

By Kelly Johnson

Catholic Healthcare West, operator of the local Mercy hospitals, has awarded nearly a half-million dollars in community grants to 25 nonprofits in Sacramento, Yolo and Nevada counties.

CHW's total gift of $491,500 is the most that the San Francisco-based health care system has given since it started awarding community grants in 1990. In all, CHW has handed out $4.2 million to 193 organizations in the Sacramento area and $27.7 million to projects throughout the CHW system.

The system allocates a percentage of its expenses to its community grants program each year, which has meant the total grows every year. Last year, 27 groups received $439,000.

Projects must be in the areas of health care, social services, education, economic development or holistic health. The grants are funded by contributions from Catholic Healthcare West's member hospitals.

This year's grants, which range from $5,000 to $25,000, will go toward health issues such as Alzheimer's disease and chronic disease management, and community-based programs that provide services from birth to end-of-life. These latest recipients work with local ethnic communities and provide services to multiple generations, from infants to the elderly.

Seven of the recipients haven't previously received donations from CHW: Community School Solutions of California, Mercy Education Resource Center, Mutual Assistance Network, My Sister's House, Sacramento Native American Health Center, Sierra Family Medical Clinic and The Effort.

The other recipients are Alzheimer's Outreach Project; Catholic Social Services; CommuniCare Health Centers; Community Chaplaincy Inc.; Community Resource Project; KARE Crisis Nursery Inc.; MAAP; Rebuilding Together; Sacramento Children's Home Crisis Nursery Program; Sacramento Life Center; Sierra Adoption Services; Sierra Nevada Children's Services; Sierra Nevada Community Health Plan; Society for the Blind; St. John's Shelter; WEAVE Inc.; Women's Empowerment and Yolo Family Service Agency.
