PHCD meetings will focus on medical models
Two upcoming public meetings of the Petaluma Health Care District Board of Directors will focus on what type of medical-practice model is best suited for Petaluma.
After spending several weeks studying the matter, Dr. Martin Serota, an East Bay consultant, will report his findings to the PHCD board at its meeting on Wednesday, July 8.
Serota, a physician specializing in medical-practice models, will make the presentation at the board’s regular meeting, scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. in Petaluma Valley Hospital’s Groverman Hall.
Then, on Saturday, July 11 from 9 a.m. to noon, PHCD board members will discuss Serota’s findings and recommendations at a strategic planning meeting. The meeting will take place at the conference room at 1425 N. McDowell Blvd., where the health-care district is housed.
The Petaluma Health Center’s efforts to secure funding for a new building also will be discussed at the two meetings.
The PHCD board hired Serota in May to make a recommendation as to what model or models can best help private-practice physicians to collaborate to cut costs. The considerable expense in running a private practice, as well as the high cost of living and housing in Petaluma, have presented obstacles in recruiting and retaining physicians.
During the past six years, several physicians have left to join Kaiser or become partners in an enterprise.
After Serota’s presentation, board members might decide that one model is best for Petaluma, but also might determine that a modified version of a model or more than one model is most appropriate.
Kevin Klockenga, president and CEO of St. Joseph Health System of Sonoma County, and Kathie Powell, executive director of the Petaluma Health Center as well as a PHCD board member, have been very involved in discussions about medical models.
