PHC chief’s talk to focus on proposed cuts
The medical director of the Petaluma Health Center will be one of the featured speakers for a press conference on June 10 in Santa Rosa about the impact of proposed state budget cuts.
The press conference — which is being hosted by the California Primary Care Association, Latino Coalition for a Healthy California and Redwood Community Health Coalition — will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Sonoma County Indian Health Project, at 144 Stony Point Road.
The featured speakers will be Dr. Kelly Pfeifer, medical director of the Petaluma Health Center and Redwood Community Health Coalition; Carmela Castellano-Garcia, CEO of the California Primary Care Association; and Al Hernandez-Santana, executive director of the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California.
Other health center leaders, community leaders and local elected officials are scheduled to participate.
“The community clinics wanted to have this press conference to let the community know about the impacts they cuts will have on them,” said Pedro Toledo, director of community and government relations for the Redwood Community Health Coalition.
He said that since Medi-Cal money provides a substantial portion of health-care clinics’ budgets, cuts in the program would have huge impacts.
“The clinics are planning for the worst. This could means fewer services offered, and possible down-sizing,” Toledo said.
